My Trix
release : 2001
label : TrackMode
cat. nr. : 027
type : 12"
co-artists : none
tracks:
- original mix
- "Bismark Hotel" mix
- "A Warmer View" mix
Very laidback deep-house with broken beat rhythms, interesting change of style by GU.  Pretty comparable to the style of the Fish Fry EP and the more chilled-down tracks on the Lounge Excursions LP.
Three different mixes offered here. The original is an epic story of warm basslines and fuzzy feelings during a long summer-night, embraced by gentle mid-tempo beats. For lovers of the somewhat more dance-able tracks, there's the "Bismark Hotel" mix. Last but not least there's the "A Warmer View" mix taking things way deep on an organic breakbeat tip with soulfull vocals.
Once again Glenn Crocker manages to go one step further in the long history of making quality deep-house music. A very recommended single! (Say Vegin)
Nothing But A Groove
release : 2000
label : Nite Life Collective
cat. nr. : 021
type : 12"
co-artists : none
tracks:
- Nothing but a Groove
- Nothing but a Dub
Another one of those typical GU tracks: swingin' rhythm, mellow vibes and the trademark Moog synths.
The dub mix on the flipside comes out a bit monotonous compared to the original, oh well ... GU is in a league of his own anyway, when it comes to tunes like this.
All in all quite enjoyable, with a silky smooth production that's getting better with every new release the man puts out. Ain't nothing but a groove that makes ya move! (Say Vegin)
Society Rules
release : 2000
label : Guidance

tracks:

GU, The Master of the Deep..... Deep grooves and vibes hmmmmmmmmm
If you want stuff like that well I think that you're at the right place. GU released a lot of records on the Guidance label the last years. All his releases are high quality deep-house!!! And this new Guidance 074 is super quality... Also the typical bass of GU is present in these tracks, combined with great 70s influenced flutes and keyboard melodies! It features two long tracks:
Society Rules = grooves+jazz+Guitar and moogs= GU cocktail!!
City People is a litle bit more mellow, with Mikkiel’s vocal harmony, great combination! (Howard 14/06/2000)
Essentials Pt.3
release : 2000
label : DustTraxx
cat. nr. : 021
type : EP
co-artists : none
tracks:
- Conquistador
- Get Back
- Supernova
Yeahhhhh!!!!! Finally after years waiting and the Cajual decade of the Essential series of GU, he is back again with Essentials part 3. This record is better than ever before!!!
I’m just shaking when I’m listening to this record!!! The Essential series started a few years ago on the Cajual label (Chicago, label of Cajmere). At that time a lot of todays well known Chicago artists such as Johnny Fiasco, Derick Carter, Boo Williams, etc… released their best tracks on this label. Unfortunately, some sad things happened between label manager Curtis, alias Cajmere and his artists, causing almost all artists to leave Cajual one by one and so did GU, eventually meaning the end of the legendary Cajual label.
GU released then on other labels such as Nite Life, Guidance, Mush, etc…. But never we thought that he was going to continue the series of GU Essentials!! And now he did! The new Essential is produced on Dust Traxx a sub label of Nite Life collective from Chicago. And like I said this record is beter then ever! These are the 3 tracks on the maxi vinyl:
A1:Conquistador: Great track, soft GU moogs and the real GU bassline. In this track Glenn used the same sample like Ian Pooley did on his Calipso EP in 1997. Be sure this track will shake your whole room.
B1:Get Back: This track is the softiest track of the maxi but don’t care as it is also a great track! There is the typical GU guitar in it, the moogs, making it a jazzy experience!
B2:Super Nova: Yeahhhhh I think this is the best track of the maxi, very good bassline and GU uses this time a sample of the well know Loft Classic series, but giving it an extra dimension for sure. (Howie)
Operation Jaz House
release : 2000
label : Nite Life Collective
cat. nr. : 018
type : EP
co-artists : Mike Saxon (scatting & guitar), Mikkiel (co-producer)
tracks:
- Operation Jaz
- Sand Lot
- Soundz Melody
The recent trend in downtown Chicago seemed to be that GU was getting heavier, more 'jackin' style, while Boo Williams -former king of first-class party house attacks- became smoother. Maybe Glenn lost his girl to his big friend ("-Oh no, Joanne, don't go, I..." "-Shut up, Glenn-dude, if I said I wanted more fat stuff, I didn't mean shit-like hamburgers !"). Anyway, maybe GU just started making mellow stuff again, trying to get his girl back or this record contains only older tracks (the label mentions the pre-millenium year 1999) In any case, the winners are the deep house freaks, which pretty much defines ourselves.
'Sand Lot' is the more traditional GU stuff and we like basics when they come from this man : easy build-up and more bedroom than dance-club atmosphere. 'Operation Jaz House' does a mighty fine job as a title track : GU finds another way to twist his moogs so that after five years of the typical GU-sound, this track sounds as fresh as ever. Mike Saxton plays guitar, just like on the classic Guidance ep's (Guidance n° 19 and n° 26), no doubt in the name of the God of Israel again, and takes care of some vocal effects that, in the hands of Glenn-san become tweakin' synth effects or even trumpets that blend fantastically with the presence of deep melodies. 'Sounz Melody' has the unfortunate honour to be relatively ignorable compared to all those heavenly sounds, but it's not a bad track after all. All in all, together with the release of 'Essentials 3' and 'Society Rules' within the same month GU carried out a very concentrated deep house attack, keepin' us hungry for more... (Outspan)
Moving
release : 2000
label : Nite Life Collective
cat. nr. : 015
type : 12"
co-artists : Jackie Green (vocals), Mike Saxon (guitar), Mike Clark (remix)
tracks:
- 70's Vibe Mix
- Garage Dub
- GU's Personal Dub
- Mike Clark's Filter Dub
This Nite Life collective EP offers 4 variations on the Moving track. It's perhaps GU's most traditional mixture of garage & disco sounds, offering 4 highly vocal songs. And as the vocals are more present in this release, the moogs are more absent unfortunately. On this release, Glenn Underground choose Jackie Green for the vocal input. Without a doubt, the Moving EP goes after that happy seventies disco atmosphere, with the "70's vibe mix" being closest in sound archicture to a disco classic, but nevertheless offering a GU touch. "GU's personal dub" puts the accent on a dry phat deep beat and does away with the nice vocal melody of the 70's vibe mix by resampling oneliners all over. Mike Clark's filtered dub does not seem to offer very much more though. Finally, there is the garage dub, where Mike Saxon guitar play and the typical GU bassline is perhaps most present of all. All in all, not a very strong Glenn Underground release. (ez jun/2000)
Ascension
release: 1999
label: Nite Life Collective
cat nr.: 013
type: EP
co-artists: none
tracks:
- One Way Back
- Risen
- Stratosphere
- Groove Beyond

Looks like GU will continue what he started with the "A Story of Deepness LP", jackin' beats and lots of discotised sounds. The period when he released those melancholic, almost laidback, tunes seems to be completely over.

"One Way Back" is a good example: standard driving deep-house beats, strings and textures. Fortunatly GU throws in his famous moog sounds, but nothing in this track gets above-average though.
Track A2 is called "Risen" and this is why we love GU's music!! The baseline makes ya move your body and tap your feet, while your mind floats away with the spacey synths. Halfway the track the moog kicks in together with the keys and it really sets off, this is really superb!! With every new release GU manages to create new and exciting sounds with those moog synths! A short break follows and by the next minute it's already time to flip the record.
"Stratosphere" sets the tempo a teeny bit slower, just enough to make this one of those "early in the evening" type of swingers. Very nice, accoustic sounding, percussion and of course, those looooong moogs are here again. Dreamy stuff that makes you think about the good old days back in 1996 ;-)
Track B2, "Groove Beyond", is another good deep-houser with an emphasis on the synths and keys. Maybe GU thought all this needed a good base to stand on and he constructed a nice 'n heavy beat to support all this beauty.

type: EP
tracks:
- Trek 'A1' 70$
- Jaz Mode
- Very Colourful
Again a release on a new label. This time we get 3 nice Disco-House tracks that bring back the well-known and loved GU sound from earlier 12"es like "70's Trip" and "CUO Trance".

We start off with "Trek 'A1' 70$", I could start another boring lecture about the weird titles the tracks have, but I'm gonna stick to the music this time ...
Vibes, moog synths and a disco sample combined with a deep house beat. That's all we want and that's all were gonna get.
The first track on the logo-side "Jaz Mode" has a more driving rhythm to it. After a few seconds the typicall only-GU-could-have-composed-that-supa-funky bassline kicks in, and I'm groovin' allready! A handfull of melody layers and quite an original moog synth finish the job.
"Very Colourful" is the third and final track, a bit more spacey sounds than the previous ones and I like it! It's certainly the best pick of this EP. The moogs are back and together with the nice keyboard melodies this makes it the perfect afterhours deep-house cut that brings the right atmosphere.
What more do we need?

The Fish Fry
release : 1998
label :
Mush
cat. nr. : 004
type : 12"
co-artists : Mike Saxton (guitar)
- The Fish Fry (part 1)
- The Fish Fry (part 2)
- The Fish Fry (part 3)
This is GU's first release on this fairly new label and it's also the first time (to my knowledge) that a GU record sounds this way. Extremely slow, extremely jazzy. In fact this isn't even deep-house, this is future-jazz-with-a-GU-touch! The typical GU sound is there but we get a supajazzy laidback beat instead of a pumping house-beat.
"part 1" is a pure piece of acid-jazz with funky guitar
"part 2" sounds like a deep-house cut pitched at (approximately) -16
"part 3" is a very spacey chill-out track with dreamy moog synths, nice horns and xylophone bits.
Excellent 12".

Jisco jazz
EZBoy almost lost a painting that fell of the wall, and I myself lost my headphones. Turned the volume way too much up while not knowing what was going to happen. What happened ? GU happened.
'Jaz Love #2' really tests your speakers even harder than any GU-track before. It puts in some deep sound in between the beats that can't even be heard without decent woofers and makes listening to GU hazardous to unstable constructions in a range of 2 kilometres around your turntable.
'Leave 'En To-Day' is less crushin', but lighter, smoother and more 'classic GU'. Including the spacy moogs. Nevertheless, here we also find a new element that we never heard with GU before : a cheesy/childish female voice floats on top of the bass, on top of the melodies and right below the moogs. Talkin' about layered music, GU piles them up !
'Jisco Jazz' makes us very happy because it is the first time we managed to identify a sample Glenn used, if he ever used one before, that is.
Taken on the whole, this album sounds more modern than anything GU ever made before, and because of the all-importance of the bass, the addition of cheesy vocals and the disco sample in 'Jisco Jazz', it sets the standard for a new GU-sound. "Change is the essential process of all existence." (Spock in Star Trek) For the insiders : it is a downright challenge to Matt Herbert. (Outspan)

Pancake Jaz
A revolutionary maxi for GU concerning track titles. '(Burning the) Midnite Oil' must be the longest track-title in GU-history and 'Disco, House, etc.' sounds quite original and even funny. What he means by 'Pancake Jazz' is until today unknown.
How about the music ? '(Burning the) Midnite Oil' starts with little variation. Only when the bass guitar starts gettin' melodic and the moogs come in, then the track really bangs your speakers again. Some patience folks, and GU will hit you in full fatt force.
'Disco, house etc.' is by far the best track on this EP : the kinky sample is the perfect basis for cheesy vocals and GU-patented moogs. Smashin'.
'Pancake Jazz' is, in one word, disappointing. So, please follow my advice and flip the record over again, ok ? There we go again : '(Burning the) Midnite Oil' starts with litt....Etcetera. (Outspan)

Head of House

The sequel to the classic Guidance 019, GU presents four tracks that only affirm what we knew before : Deep House has his hero. ‘G&S Motion’ is Glenn and Steve who proove again that a Moog and a Guitar can form a perfect combination, whenever they’re handled by inspired people. But one way or another, it misses the mythical intro that made ‘House of Blues’ (see above) a classic GU production.
‘Concrete Level Jazz’ is solid, indeed, but also has a very swift intro to make sure the groove gets you going right from the start, ’7th Rhodes’ was featured before on an impossible-to-find rare 12" and the title ‘Head of House’ shows GU is not quite the most modest artist. But then again, who can blame him ? (Outspan)

House of Blues
-
Waterhodes
- Wilderness Funk

You know, not every GU-track is GC, we clearly make a distinction between an average GU-record that still equals a sublime deep-house track very few ever release, and a GC which level is impossible to reach for anyone but GU. But anyway, 'House of Blues' is a GC. Again. I know. Can't help it.
Steve Israel (don't know his real name as of yet) surely has something to do with that : he strikes his strings, GU brings in the deep bass, Steve goes with it, some trancy tunes complete the composition and by then, you should be halfway to heaven... My description makes you think every GU-track is equally boring ? Sorry : I don't write the way GU composes. I just listen to the tunes, which is exactly what you are supposed to do instead of sitting in front of browser.
'Watershades' doesn't get that high by far, 'Wilderness Funk' on the contrary has that sweaty jungle atmosphere you occasionally find somewhat less intense in a Drum'n Bass intro. (Outspan)

70’s Trip

release : 1997
label :
Cajual
cat. nr. : 272
type : 12"
co-artists : none
tracks:
- 70's Trip
- Dizco Moog
- Do you like it

The A-side ‘70’s Trip’ is a somewhat straightforward house track, but the way in which GU gradually adds his typical elements plus the natural deep bass which makes your speakers sound like the British Philharmonic Orchestra on da funky tip, lifts this track above your average Strictly Rhythm record (no offence!). ‘Do You Like It ?’ on the B-side is a somewhat retorical question (=question that does not expect any answer, for the unknowing) since we do like it (funky theme that does not stop, no breaks, no intros, just plain pumpin’ groove), but not as much as the first track on the B-side…because…Touché ! First record listed and already, we stumble upon a GC, a classic GU-product which writes another chapter in the Chronicles of Deep House : 'Dizco Moog' (B1) centers around a razorsharp analogue theme that keeps on wandering in your mind some three hours after, shifts some decent bass under it, adds the finishing touch with some spacy tones and definetely rocks your body. Smashing ! (Outspan)
Essentials II

release : 1996
label :
Cajual
cat. nr. : 248
type : EP
co-artists : none
tracks:
- Mine moods
- ?
- The Wheel
- In the Midst

We are not sure whether the tracks featured on the Essentials are re-releases of previous, even-more-damn-hard-to-find records, but -honestly- we don't care. The only thing that matters is... money, a big car, a beautiful girlfriend (like one with red hair-touché!), and some GU records for your car stereo. Just kidding.
'Mine Moods' is probably the first chronological indication that GU's trademark is going to be those analogue spacy sounds that he spreads over his layered rythmes and funky B-linez. '?' shows a short decline in track-title inspiration, while 'The Wheel' and 'In The Midst' have this more tweakin' acid sound of GU's early years. These records are essential for sure, but hey, about every second filled with the work of that Chi-Master is ! (Outspan)

C.V.O. Trance

release : 1996
label : Peacefrog
cat. nr. : 054
type : EP
co-artists : none
tracks:
- C.V.O Trance
- Sea Quest
- Cat n.a. Thy Trap

The colour of this record is an awful yellow that hurts your eyes, fortunately, G.U. is there to bring an unctuous and sunny atmosphere in your mind, blazing right through your ears. Yes, 'C.V.O. Trance' is THE summer groove of all summers (even the 'summer of '69, whatever Brian Adams might say).
'Cat N.A. Thy Trap' must be some spelling mistake because it sounds kind of senseless (by the way C.V.O. Trance on the A-side is also misspelled C.U.O. Trance), our guess is that GU's handwriting doesn't live op to his ability to handle the keyboards.
No matter, because another GC (=GU Classic, which you should have figured out by now) is about to reveal its mystical Synth sound on the B-side : 'Sea Quest' is both a relaxed, after-hour experience and a disco-bomb, depends on the moment you spin it, but it's GU for sure, and he's doing it again and again and again and again...can't get enough of that track ! Way ahead of the late 90s tech-house hype, GU magically fuses techno, electro and house in 1993.
Be carefull when you're used to his newer polished productions, because it can get pretty raw and hard with these Djax-Up things. Focused on dancefloor enjoyment and still considered a classic release among fans of detroit house/electro music. (Say Vegin)
