Abstract Jazz Lounge II
NiteGrooves, 2xLP

At the end of 1998, a time at which we would almost have declared the deephouze scene officially dead, one of the record labels that surprised us at a time the deephouze scene still had to be born, makes us think again about the above statement. Now, what do we actually mean by all this ?
Well, one of the records that caught our attention back in early 1995, was Brooklyn Friends and "Philadelphia" on NiteGrooves. Not only was the inside label logo very classy, it actually represented in not to misunderstand words what it was all about : night grooves, the thing we were looking for and maybe will be always looking for. What was more, one of the versions featured on this 12" was : D.M. Experience ! A very long (13:21 mins) track full of acoustic african drums and dreamy loungy rythms and super slowly building up towards a climax after about 9 minutes, where a pan flute solo takes over. No, we will never ever forget this pan flute sole, where you can actually hear the musician play the pan flute if you listen very very well (well, we did of course!) For us, this record set new standards in 95 for what later would be defined as typical late nineties deephouze : deep bassline, moody rythms, and playfull melodies. This New York based NiteGrooves label released a few more interesting tracks after the pivotal Brooklyn Friends release, but soon lost our interest due to several questionable weak garage releases. And here we are again, at the end of 1998, where NiteGrooves is back and show us again what deephouze is all about. With Abstract Jazz Lounge II, the focus is again on almost entirely instrumental warm deep jazzy night grooves. Do not misunderstand the title of the compilation. This is not another progressive downtempo jazz selection, this is targeted at your feet. Whether it is piano, strings, horns, trumpets or sax that is adding the cream to this deephouze dessert, you'll not be able to resist to dance to the very melodic warm grooves. Highly recommended to set the mood right are : Straight Magic by Ananda Project (Wamdue Kids jazz mix), Eclipse by Jask (super bass guitar on jazzy rythms and moody organ sound) and the even more jazzy Jaymz Nylon presents Textile Orchestra with Sunset Trip.
Is there again life for deephouze ? We doubt it, but this pearl is a welcome addition to our collection.
