Kubus
Kubus
SeeHear - CD 2002
This group is a sextet of Swiss musicians who create music with a distinct fusion sound, formed by elements of jazz, rock and electronics.
It would probably be a long shot to compare Kubus to 70s artists like Slave or Lenny White, but they do have things in common. They are certainly doing stuff that's comparable to Tortoise and Nils Petter Molvaer at times.

The flow of the album is a little like attending a live performance of a band as the production sound has a very organic and acoustic feel to it. There's slow and heavy tracks and the tempo changes a lot during the tracks which is a typical fenomenon at most gigs.

Remarkable tracks are: Hippodrom with rolling drums and the Taxi Driver sample that fits in quite well with the dark-ish mood. The downtempo vibe of El Dorado that leans to post-rock. The 9 epic minutes of Akkustikheaven that breaks loose in a storm of guitars, then twisting and turning between saxophone solos and groovy keyboards to finally drift away in the closing track Valuta where the electronics are predominant and form a nice duet with a dreamy flute.

Certainly an original approach on jazz-fusion with enough potential to withstand repeated listening.
