Tomasz Stanko Quartet
Soul of Things I-XIII
1x CD ECM 2002
The Tomasz Stanko Quartet consists of a polish trumpet, piano, double bass and drums player and brings on this album very soft jazz. The album as such is a very consistent full mood trip, being to jazz what ambient is to electronic music. In this way, if you're into ambient music, this album is a welcome variation that achieves more or less the same effects of bringing you into other worlds through delicate piano and trumpet play with soft rythmic bass & drum guidance on the background. As with many good ambient albums, there are no real heights or lows on the album. It is more a complete listening and dream experience. The construction of the tracks is creative & inspired enough to avoid sounding cheesy, which is often a risky balance in this kind of music.

Let me tell that Tomasz Stanko Quartet managed very well to provide enough spice not to sound cheesy. Some clever composing techniques assure that listening to any of the album tracks instantly reminds of the full Soul of Things album sound but at the same time all tracks are like constantly evolving minimal jazzy melodies. It might be surprising that this kind of album is among my favourite albums for someone who can appreciate other music varying from a wild Claude Young set to a wicked disco oldie to some atmospheric drum'n'bass or some mid nineties FSOL album. The answer is simple though. In the never ending search for the perfect music for any mood or situation, the Tomasz Stanko Quartet definitely gained a place with Soul of Things for me as superb jazz album for chilling. Check out this 74 minutes of enjoyfull jazz ambience.
