Till Brönner
Blue Eyed Soul
1x CD Universal Jazz 2002
Let me start by saying that the year 2002 so far has been musically a lousy and boring year. Few were the releases that were not predictable even fewer those that feature music straight from the heart & soul instead of from the money minded brains. Do we need more boring cheap deep house copies ? Anyone needs yet another lounge album ? Can you keepup with the pace of ever more not really differentiating Compost releases ? Well, if you ask me, the answer is definitely NO. Let me guide you instead to an album that so far really made a lasting impression on me this year : Blue Eyed Soul of Till Brönner! To capture the spirit of the album in a few words : a very heavy dose of smooth jazz and deep funk. All tracks can be classified as very laidback and moody. There is a heavy focus on deep & warm drums and bass. The spice is added by the means of acoustic instruments such as trumpet and bass guitar. Note to DJ Martin the Martian, the Fender Rhodes are of course also present! Here and there, Till Brönner is providing melancholic vocals, in an atmosphere that can be best described as a lonely after midnight whiskey bar scene. The traditional jazz funk ensemble sound is broken by turntable scratching on several tracks.

Some highlights of the album : Take the track "Diavolo", wow, that omnipresent deep bass and heavy kickdrum with funky hammond licks, melancholic trumpet and occasional scratching and scats. In short, an extraordinary listening experience, be it in your sofa, on a car trip or wherever you prefer to taste really good music. Or skip a little further to "Tub of love", a soft and romantic track that can easily stand the test among the most romantic tunes of Stan Getz of John Coltrane. Till Brönner's voice must be at best here, being soft, smooth & silky and strong at the same time guided by again that deep drum and jazzy trumpet. As if that was not enough, have a stop at "Love Somebody" for excellent fusion with spacey deep blown trumpet, heavy bass guitar licks and again occasional turntable scratching for a guaranteed instant goose bumps effect. There are so many more goodies on the Blue Eyed Soul album but I'll leave that up to your pleasant discovery. As far as I am concerned, this album is one of the best so far heard in 2002 and brought me already many hours of listening pleasure.
