![]() V.A. Cookin' Ingredients 1x CD Good Looking Records |
As you could read on the FreestyleGrooves webpage, we were clearly blasted away by the phenomenal SoulFood compilation on Cookin' records at the end of 1999. It took some time but it looks as if Cookin' Ingredients is an attempt for a SoulFood folluw up. Now, almost 2 years later, the big question is, how good is Cookin' Ingredients at touching our hearts and taking our minds away ? Well, it's a good attempt but in todays flood of lounge things (yes, we cannot stand a sofa on an album anymore) it's hard to find anything that goes beyond "standard" nice sounding loungy type of music. The thrill is missing in the chill. Artemis, Jupiter in Taurus is a strong and warm blend of future funk and nu jazz. Cedar and Golden is a dreamy warm well worked out downtempo jazzgroove. Aphartec and Quebec is perhaps one of the strongest tracks. It features an extremely long build up of the track, nicely fuses bossa elements, slow funky beats and many variations of fresh synth and moog sounds. Realside's Reality offers a mushroom jazz styled downtempo groove, warm & atmospheric and with a certain melancholic feel over it and hiphop elements here and there. Meeting Minds and Strong Nature is worth mentioning as well. More slo mo beats, melancholic loungy synths. All in all, Cookin' Ingredients is a nice album of 9 future funk and nu-jazz tracks without any really disappointing track. It misses the 'new element' though, making it less creative & original than SoulFood and that's audible and even visible in the artwork. ez |
