It was a slow process, it took several years, but it grew. It grew
in a steady way always reaffirming itself with each new discovery, but now it is here and it is stronger than ever. It must probably
have all started with "Hurt me". Excuse me that it took so long but the good things in life don't always come fast and easy, ain't it ?
What the hell am I talking about ? Well, it's my deepest respect for an artist or should I say genius. Yes, David Moufang, alias Move D
or should I say, Miles Davis v2.0 ? There are the Move D projects, the Conjoint projects, so many smaller projects Move D worked on
and then of course there are the projects of Move D and Pete Namlook, named Koolfang or later simply Move D & Pete Namlook. One thing is
a constant: Wherever Move D is involved, the jazz dope level reaches new unseen heights only Miles Davis was able to get into. With this review we unveil two early albums on the legendary FAX label being Koolfang's Jambient and Koolfang II's Gig in the sky. It took me a trip to Berlin to get a copy of these albums which are these days unfortunately very rare. With FAX's known reputation for limited editions there are most likely only something like 2000 to 3000 copies of this album, so it is really a shame so few people can get into to touch with such great music. So, I can only say, start looking for your copy of the albums today, tomorrow could be too late. Let's kick of with Jambient, the first project of Move D and Pete Namlook under the name Koolfang. First track is equally named Koolfang and is an almost 20 minutes tranquil jazz trip. Move D and Pete Namlook redefine jazz into electronics like perhaps no one did before. Its about warm and fuzzy sometimes simple sounding soft jazz melodies but with just that very high dream level. It evolves into Fusonics, where the jazz blends towards rythmic beats with a mid nineties sound and yes, perhaps a little trancy feel but enough whirling moogs to keep it interesting. After a soundscape interlude of O-Ton, it's time for Counter. Again, warm electronica at its best and jazz elements all over it, good for just over 10 minutes. A great experience. Moving on to "Gig in the sky", we're invited again with 12 minutes of a super dreamy "Come Closer". It is a stunning downtempo jazz composition. Close your eyes and you'd almost think this is George Benson playing his guitar or Miles Davis playing the trumpet in a futuristic environment. But no, all tribute goes to the Koolfang duo. No doubt this track is heavily smoking jazz dope. "Bug Report" brings in the rythm again with sounds vaguely reminiscent of Spacetime Continuum. Yes, it has nowadays that mid nineties retro feel, but that brings back so much memories of that time we still enjoy it. "It's all the music" brings the pace somewhat down. Move D and Pete Namlook on a high trip, trumpet, soft warm voices, ...things that make your speakers melt. And time to chill out with "Gig in the sky" where the moogs again show the best of themselves and take you instantly into dreams far away. Sit back, away from the nervous and stressfull days in life and enjoy this amazing output of David Moufang and Pete Namlook. It's sad that these artists are so much underrated and that their music is so hard to find in the stores. Anyway, if you're unable to buy their music, it will be our pleasure to come and play these chilling tunes for ya on a Freestyle Crew deejay session. Make sure to install plenty of sofas before inviting us. ez oct 2001 |
