SoulOS
butterfly
album preview
We were asked to check out on the MP3 preview of this album and since we're nice people...here comes a short first impression.

SoulOS is Andrew Mays, a web designer from Nashville, Tennessee and, no, he doesn't make country music you ill-minded people, he floates between film music, experimental electronics and pure sound-scapes.

The tracks on 'butterfly' sound like a mixture between old-skool µ-ziq tracks and Fax-soundscapes. As a whole, it comes quite close to John Beltran's classic ambient album on Peacefrog. Strange sounds create their very own atmosphere and bring up images of deserted, half-collapsed homes in the middle of nowhere.

Building on both the tradition of entrancing film scores (Brian Eno etc.) and the possibilities of modern electronics, he aims at delivering a satisfying chill-out time. In the end -just being honest here- I however can't shake the impression that most tracks are just based on one gimmick, one sound and that, when you've heared the first 30secs of any track, you've heard the rest too.

I know it's supposed to be chill-out stuff and, really, it's nice to hear some old-skool ambient, but several tracks are trying hard to keep your attention but failing nonetheless.

SoulOS is still on a quest to look for his very own sound, that one thing you can't define in an artist tracks but is always there.
As for 'Butterfly', the foundations of this sound might be easier found in interesting beat experiments like 'nocturnal patterns' and 'socket 1' than in the soundscapes like 'nostalgia' and 'computational maneuvering'.
Nonetheless, SoulOS can be a name to remember for all those "Staalplaat" fans out there...
