Herbert
Bodily Functions
!K7 / Soundslike
Move over, step aside, here's the true blend of house and jazz music. While the key elements -jazz, vocals, house- might be the used in many of today's deep-house releases, the ending result is totally different. Herbert knows jazz music means more than a sampled trumpet melody - it's also about experimenting with structural elements, live piano, smokey atmosphere. Vocals mean more than an empty slogan ripped from a 20+ year old record - they need a message, a spiritual undertone, well ... maybe not but they do need originality. House-music means more than a 4-on-the-floor beat - it's about deep basslines and irrisistable rhythms.

Perhaps it's less aimed at the dancefloor, despite the uptempo beats of several tracks, but better suited for home-listening. I don't care, this stuff moves me unlike other mixtures of jazz & house.

The sensual vocals with sensitive lyrical-content by Dani Siciliano (remember Around The House) appear on each and every song, they need some getting used to, but that doesn't bother me one bit, they really fit in and enhance the music.
Herbert's productions are special because of his view on sampling, he refuses to use samples from other records, factory-settings from synthesizers, by using only found-sounds (recordings of the noise generated by all things that surround us) and live instruments, he's able to create a unique sound. The concept of the found-sounds on this album is, like the title says, "Bodily Functions" they're mainly recorded sounds from human bodies, sometimes digitally tampered and mostly used in background elements or as percussive instruments.

The album is very versatile, there's the freaky synths of "You saw it all", the trademark Herbert sound in "Leave Me Now", the live-jazz downtempo feel of "I know", the intimate minimalism of "I miss you", the very danceable "The Audience" that should be able to heat up any dancefloor (well at least it works for the floor in my room) with it's gospel-like chants, and lots more waiting for you to be discovered.

The extremeley talented producer Matthew Herbert adds another masterpiece to his long list of releases ...
