New Sector Movements

Virgin 2LP
(no, I'm not gonna make easy jokes about the title)

Back in 1997, there was this rare to find EP on the brand new People label. No, I know I'm gonna get some 'yea, yeah, but I have it too you know' comments, but it is a mighty piece of vinyl to have, all thanks to the "futuristic dancer" track by, yes, new sector movements. It's the track that set the pace for all new people releases: fresh, funky and definitely something unheard.

We're like 4 years after and making an album in the same style he has always produced might have been a bit too easy for IG Culture, the man behind NSM. So the key element now that has been added is, vocals, lyrics, voices, text, you know people singing over the afro-rythmic beats and flutes.

The nifty sound of people is still there so what matters in the quality of this album, is the quality of its vocals. And is that quality smooth?
Well, yes and no.

On the first disc, a lot of vocals just don't sound right. They're cheesy, boring, and plain unnecessary. A track like 'penny dropped' or 'the sun' is disgraced by lousy vocals. 'Anthem' and 'never been closer' (feat. Bembe Segue) still show that there is potential.
The second disc is, in my opinion, loads better. Overall the vocals are
blended a lot better into the music. A track like 'two sides' is a truer reflection of IG's capacities and a great people-style b-line is combined with funky vocals by Eska. 'Mysterious sound' has the warm african Bembe Segue voice again that makes you think zebra's will come rushing through your door any time. 'Spontaneaous' then, features superb guitar strings while the two last tracks 'download this' and 'show dem (our time)' are worth skipping.

Overall, this could have been one great EP but an album full of it is just too much. It reminds me of the recent Modaji album (that went very R&B) but that had absolutely no real heights. At least you can enjoy the really good stuff and realize IG Culture is still a very talented producer/artist. But, hey, leave the R'n B style to Destiny's Child.
Thank you.
