![]() Nathan Haines sound travels (a restless soul production) 2LP Chilli Funk records |
Nathan Haines was the kid that would listen to Miles Davis 'Kind Of Blue'
while others would prefer the jukebox in their local bar...the man from New
Zealand has come a long way but it's thanks to people like Gilles Petterson,
The Groove Collective and dance DJ Roy 'the Roach' that the world got to
saviour his talent. Let me tell you the first time I encountered Nathan Haines. It was on one of the deep house compilations on Chilli Funk. The deep-house wasn't all that bad, but there was this one track I won't forget: Restless Soul feat. Nathan Haines 'After Ours (Restless Soul Samba Phreek Mix)'. Yummy. Samba Phreek. I couldn't have said it better myself. Nathan Haines new album 'Sound Travels' is also very samba, very phreaky. But as I expect from any good artist, there's that extra more in the album. Haines takes on different genres to add his own touch. Tracks like 'Believe' and 'The illest hobo' show nathan's classic love for latin tunes. Very much like stuff you can find on the Warp Factor or Glüklich compilations, this has definitely a more personal touch. Goes nice with Bacardi-cola too. From a 'freestlye' point of view, the second disc is more interesting. Nathan crunches on several styles of music. 'Earth is the place' is a dance-track to the likes of the Chilli Funk label, a true east coast groover. 'Long' is more the heavy beat work while 'honeycomb' does superb things with a reggae-beat. All in all excellent experiments. Just leave that 'bossa nova/latin-jazz' section with vol. 17 of Samba classics to the wannabe-loungers, it all comes in one package now with the personal signature by Da Nathan. outspanjuly01 |
