Gianluigi Di Costanzo (aka Bochum Welt) has done many recordings for various labels: Rephlex, Kromode, Axodya, Elypsia, ... They are all very good and deserve your attention as much as this release. The reason why I've chosen this particular production is because it reflects all the different styles, I've come to love and cherrish
from Bochum Welt. His tracks are typically short and powerfull, he's capable of bundling all feelings and emotions in just a few minutes. This 7-track mini-album is a perfect example,
clocking in at 19'20" and if that's a problem for you, just use the damn repeat button on your cd-player, they've put it in for some reason! Although his music is heavily influenced by 80s synth pop, Altre Forme is the first track that could actually be described as such. The vocals and beats are very cheesy, but once you start to notice the little details, it gets pretty enjoyable. It's just a matter of not taking things too seriously really! Anyway, on to Vega which is on a whole other level. This is a kind of neo-classical composition, with lingering melodies and orchestral atmosphere. So fragile and sensitive goose-bumps never stay away when this track is playing. Third track, called Star Cluster, is another gem and takes us to the world of modern electronica. Very atmospheric synths combined with tranquil beats, that's a well know recipe, but this is a preparation of pure quality. Then there's Interlude which is very reminiscent of his earliest releases, this means we're offered a 1994-style ambient-house track containing a distorted breakbeat and dreamy melodic patterns. It comes as no surprise the credits mention The Aphex Twin helped programming this track. There are also two soundscapes (one co-produced with Twin Peaks sound engineer Kim Cascone!), that provide the usual dreamy interludes for this kind of music and an original approach to the well-known Claire de Lune theme with a solo from Gianluigi on keyboard :) Say Vegin dec 2000 |
