 Funki Porcini The Ultimately Empty Million Pounds Ninja Tune |
I remember Funki Porcini
(real name : WhoCaresAnyway) stating that 'love,
pussycats and carwrecks' (1997) was to be his last album and that
he would devote all his time to making artistic B-movies. Apparently
he couldn't deny the urge to make music, or else he was just too
trendy for Ninja Tune to let him go. Maybe he just got bored with
B-movies or vice versa. Anyway, he's back with a new album. No wicked
cover this time (like the tilted car or the mushrooms on his previous
albums), just this big TV which leads me to think that the 'Ultimately
Empty' from the title means the emptiness of TV-programs. There you
go, that wasn't too hard to find out. Funki Porcini is well into the '60s revival these days. Stylish pictures in the booklet and cheesy samples mentioning bass-drums and here-we-go orchestra-style shouts. The music is very much in line with 'love, pussycats and carwrecks' : jazz played at 78rpm, chaotic drum'n bass and some ambient interludes. Been there, heard it, done that. It's just one step heavier. You see, I expect most artists to go just one step further. I expect Funki Porcini to re-invent himself. Plus, it's just not groovy enough. Too much chaos, too much weirdo stuff. I like weird stuff, but it has to lead somewhere. Early Autechre and Aphex stuff was weird because the music felt like that. Music needed a wake-up call. Now weird is just weird because everybody expects it to be that way. And boy, do they like it : I recently saw Aphex Twin's last album as biggest sell hit in a record store, way before pop bands like dEUS or K's Choice. Weird is in fact...very normal. Maybe it's just me. Maybe it's because of the non-fresh atmosphere in record stores filled with booming drum'n bass and ragga. Maybe it's because my ears are being nostalgic. Maybe it's because my bank account is not willing to give in to another experimental album with no cohesion. Maybe it's because girls just'a wanna have fun. Maybe it's just because I'm the only one. Maybe I should just get a new pair of windscreen wipers. Yeah, that must be it. outspan march00 |
