Freestyle review: Urban Flavour

V.A. Urban Flavour : Modern jazz drum'n'bass turbo funk. 1xCD : Urban Flavour		mm, the title of the album says it all, isn't it ? Well, it is definitely. If it was not for the word funk, perhaps we would have given this album a chance in these days of formulaistic drum'n'bass. But we did, are fortunately we did! The compilation features tracks of the british Urban Flavour label such as In Deep, Parallax, Pariah, Recoil, Shifty, Twisted and the New Jazz Hustler. Sure, the basis for the compilation is uptempo drum'n'bass, but it is the intense atmospheric elements, deep subbass sound and spacey chants that make the listening experience quiet enjoyable. The quality level of the compilation is very consistent. Not a single track is disappointing. Big thumbs up to Tricksta and Simon Storer, runners of the label. If we have to pick a few favorites, we would opt for Twisted and Elements, an awesome atmospheric drum'n'bass track, Parallax and Dovimas Fantasy, drum'n'bass with wicked piano riff and immense subbass sound and Shifty and Jazz ass, another killing subbass experience. For the time, your ever exploring mind needs something different than seventies funk, deephouze or acid jazz, Urban Flavour brings a welcome steamy drum'n'bass experience. ez jul/99
