![]() Kevin Yost One Starry Night 1xCD Distance |
Surprise
surprise as we start playing the Kevin Yost CD. Is this a
bootleg ?Has this been recorded in someone's kitchen ? Is
this a bad pressing ?These are the first thoughts that go
through one's mind while hearing a noisy rumbling
monotone beat for over one minute. Hmm, sure this should
be Kevin Yost and 'One starry night'.. Just before we
press the skip button, some piano melodies appear, slowly
almost like stars appear in a dark night. And yes,
finally there is that Kevin Yost sound building up with
the ingredients of a smooth deep beat, jazzy piano licks
and a warm guitar sound. And that is almost true for the
entire album. It's Kevin Yost, no more, no less. True to
his style, Kevin Yost is the purveyor of fine jazz
grooves. His brand is warm & jazzy dreamy deephouze. Listen to 'Round but midnight' with a catchy synth conga-like sound, backed by dreamy strings, 'Unpredictable U' where Kevin Yost adds sax on a static sounding groovy bassline. 'If only she knew', 'On my way' and 'The things we do' are already standard setting deephouze classics which should be familiar from previous 12" release on I-records.Only on 'Love' and 'Sunset: secrets', Kevin Yost brings a slight variation on his recepies, exploring subtle breakbeats in an allround jazz atmosphere, cooking the whole thing up to a chilly experience. And that's about it for the 'One Starry night' album of Kevin Yost, leaving the listener somehow with an unsatisfied feeling. Although Kevin masters the jazzy deephouze style almost like no one else, he does not go beyond his mastership to create the real gems. Or have we become too demanding ? Did we put our expectations too high ? We leave that question open for you, so check out Kevin's new album, it's a nice and fine deephouze collection, but we don't think it will end up as an essential classic album. apr/99 ez |
